Course Content

During the first six weeks of the course students students work one-on-one with teachers and instructional aides.  In this diagnostic process, students' strengths and needs are identified, supplemental materials are provided, and individual needs-based instruction occurs.  The second marking period includes individual and small-group instruction focused on organizational techniques, communication skills and basic tools needed to succeed in the classroom.  Students will also focus on reading strategies (before, during and after) that will help build comprehension, retention, analysis and evaluation.  Finally, students will develop and improve writing skills.  Writing lessons will cover everything from proper MLA format to the entire writing process.  Included are the typical areas of difficulty—prewriting, organization, supporting evidence, quote integration, introductions and conclusions.  While formal lessons designed to prepare students for the semester in academic core classes may occur, the majority of the semester will consist mostly of informal lessons stemming from individual needs in the students’ classes and assignments.
